The Trump family is reportedly in talks with developers to build Australia’s first Trump Tower on a prime beachfront site on the Gold Coast.

Daily Mail reports that the proposed tower, which would feature the iconic gold ‘Donald Trump’ lettering, is planned for a vacant site at 3 Trickett Street, Surfers Paradise. No formal development application has yet been submitted.

“There are no details on it yet. We have no application with the City at this time,” a council source told the Gold Coast Bulletin. “But we have seen plans with renders and they have a gold Donald Trump on it. Every Trump hotel has a big gold Donald Trump on it, and this one will be the same.”

The current owner of the land, Macau casino operator Loi Keong Kuong, is reportedly exploring ways to bring the plan to reality, potentially with an Australian development partner. The Trump family previously considered building a similar property in 2008 but abandoned the project due to the global financial crisis.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate welcomed interest in developing the city’s shoreline but stressed that no application has been received. He said:

“The Iluka site is a premium piece of land for a resort or hotel development, so I would not be surprised if the Trump family are interested. We need more hotel developments ahead of the 2032 Olympics, and we would welcome an investment of this nature.”

Local Liberal MP Zoe McKenzie said she hopes the Trump brand could expand beyond the Gold Coast, suggesting other underdeveloped islands like Dunk Island, Keppel Island, and Lindeman Island as potential sites.

Not everyone, however, welcomed the news. Some Australians reacted negatively online, with comments ranging from “Please, just no” to “Ewwwwwwwwww”. Others, however, said the Gold Coast would be ideal for a Trump property.

The 3494-square-metre site has been empty since 2013 and was purchased by Loi Keong Kuong in 2019 for $56.5 million. The land was previously approved for an 89-storey “super tower” by Chinese developer Forise, a project that was later abandoned.
