The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed profound condolences following the death of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the Plateau cleric who famously sheltered more than 200 Christians during a violent attack in Barkin Ladi.
In a statement on Tuesday, Mission Nigeria praised the late Imam’s courage and commitment to religious tolerance. According to the US Department of State, Imam Abdullahi’s actions “saved hundreds of lives” and set an enduring example of interfaith coexistence.
“Imam Abdullahi was a fearless advocate for religious tolerance, and his humanity positively manifested interfaith harmony,” the statement read. “His legacy of peace and acceptance will continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike.”
The Imam was formally recognized by the US in 2019 with the International Religious Freedom Award, a testament to his brave intervention during the 2018 attacks in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State. During the incident, he reportedly sheltered Christians fleeing armed assailants, preventing what could have been a far deadlier outcome.
Mission Nigeria noted that Imam Abdullahi’s lifelong dedication to peace extended beyond that single event, highlighting his continuous outreach across communities of different faiths.
“His efforts to promote peaceful coexistence, unity, and harmony were exemplary,” the US statement added. “He used his leadership to inspire countless individuals toward righteousness and moral uprightness.”
