Real Madrid delivered a ruthless statement of intent on Tuesday night, dismantling Monaco 6-1 in a one-sided UEFA Champions League league encounter that underlined their attacking depth and European pedigree.
The hosts wasted little time asserting control, opening the scoring in the fifth minute when Kylian Mbappe latched onto a clever lay-off from Federico Valverde and fired low into the corner.
Mbappe doubled the advantage 21 minutes later, this time finishing from close range after being set up by Vinicius Junior, as Monaco struggled to cope with Madrid’s pace and movement.
Real Madrid tightened their grip early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Vinicius squared for Franco Mastantuono, who calmly swept home to make it 3-0.
Monaco’s misery deepened four minutes later when Thilo Kehrer turned the ball into his own net under pressure, effectively ending the contest.
Vinicius then capped a dazzling individual display in the 63rd minute, weaving past defenders before unleashing a fierce strike into the top corner to make it 5-0, drawing roars from the home crowd and leaving Monaco reeling.
The visitors briefly pulled one back in the 72nd minute when Jordan Teze capitalised on a defensive lapse to score from close range, but any hope of a recovery was swiftly extinguished.
Just eight minutes later, Jude Bellingham raced through on goal and finished clinically to complete the six-goal rout.
Throughout the contest, Real Madrid’s dominance was reflected not only on the scoreboard but in their control of possession and chance creation, with Monaco goalkeeper Philipp Köhn repeatedly called into action to prevent an even heavier defeat.
