One dead as trucks collide on important Lagos bridge

One person has died following a collision involving two articulated trucks at Otedola Bridge on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, causing severe traffic delays and prompting a multi-agency emergency response.

The accident involved one trailer carrying sand and another loaded with granite. The sand-laden truck’s driver was trapped and sustained fatal injuries. LASTMA operatives extricated him and handed him to LASAMBUS, but he was confirmed dead at General Hospital, Ikeja. The second truck’s driver escaped unharmed.

In a related incident nearby, a flour-laden trailer overturned, further worsening congestion. Police from the Alausa Division were deployed to secure the area and assist with rescue operations.

Road closures affected about 80 per cent of the expressway, forcing motorists to use diversion routes via Ojodu–Olole and connecting roads towards Gbagada and Ojota.

Commenting on the crashes, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, described the incidents as “deeply regrettable and largely preventable,” blaming impatience and failure to yield, especially among heavy-duty vehicle operators.

He urged strict adherence to traffic rules and mutual courtesy among drivers, while offering condolences to the family of the deceased.
