Nigerian singer Jaywon has issued a strong warning to younger artistes who believe that high streaming numbers, money and publicity automatically make them superior to their predecessors.
Jaywon shared the message in an Instagram post amid the ongoing online feud between Wizkid and Seun Kuti, a controversy that has reignited debates about music legacy, respect and impact.
According to Jaywon, many young artistes are making the mistake of reducing music to numbers alone.
He wrote that having massive streams, strong PR support and financial power does not necessarily translate to greatness.
“The problem with a lot of you youngins and small minds is thinking music is only about numbers,” Jaywon said.
“You believe that because you’ve got streams, recognition, a strong PR machine and money to throw around, that automatically makes you the best artist in the world.”
The singer stressed that music goes beyond charts and digital metrics, explaining that true artistry lies in influence and longevity.
“Music isn’t about numbers. It’s about impact, changing minds and touching souls,” he added.
Jaywon cited global and Nigerian legends such as Bob Marley and Fela Anikulapo Kuti as examples of artistes whose relevance has endured because of the messages and cultural influence in their music.
“That’s why legends like Bob Marley and Fela still matter. Their music is forever,” he stated.
