In a stunning upset at the Allianz Arena, relegation-threatened FC Augsburg mounted a dramatic second-half comeback to defeat Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich 2-1, handing Vincent Kompany’s side their first league defeat of the 2025/26 season and snapping a 27-match unbeaten run in the competition.

Bayern appeared in control for much of the contest, taking the lead in the 23rd minute through defender Hiroki Ito. Michael Olise delivered a precise corner, and Ito rose highest to power a header into the bottom left corner, giving goalkeeper Finn Dahmen no chance.

Despite dominating possession and creating opportunities, Luis Diaz was denied by an excellent save from Dahmen, while Harry Kane and others tested the Augsburg defense, Bayern struggled to convert their chances into a decisive advantage.

Augsburg, under manager Manuel Baum and sitting precariously near the drop zone before kickoff, grew into the game after the interval.

Their persistence paid off in the 75th minute when Arthur Chaves, a recent arrival on loan, equalized with a powerful header from a corner.

The Augsburg defender outjumped the Bayern backline inside the six-yard box to direct the ball into the bottom left corner, capitalizing on a momentary lapse in concentration from home goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.

The turnaround was completed just six minutes later. Dimitrios Giannoulis surged down the left flank and delivered a low, accurate cutback into the penalty area, where Han-Noah Massengo arrived with perfect timing to slot a controlled finish past Urbig into the middle of the net, making it 2-1.

Bayern pushed desperately for an equalizer in the closing stages, introducing substitutes like Joshua Kimmich, Nicolas Jackson, and Tom Bischof to inject fresh energy.

Late efforts included a low drive from Bischof saved by Dahmen and a thunderous strike from Olise that crashed against the crossbar in the dying seconds of stoppage time, cruelly denying the hosts a point.

The defeat marks Bayern’s first Bundesliga loss since March of the previous year and ends their second-longest unbeaten streak in the league’s modern era.

Despite the result, Bayern remain top of the table on 50 points from 19 games, though the gap to challengers may narrow depending on other results.
