United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has launched an instant digital account-opening platform that allows customers across Africa and in the diaspora to open bank accounts fully online, reinforcing the lender’s push toward borderless, technology-driven banking.
The new platform enables prospective customers to begin and complete the entire onboarding process remotely, eliminating paperwork and the need for initial branch visits. By simplifying access to banking services, UBA said the initiative strengthens its leadership in digital banking while advancing financial inclusion across its markets.
Accessible via web on computers, tablets and smartphones, the platform offers a consistent user experience across devices. Customers can select their preferred country and language before proceeding, with support for both naira-denominated and diaspora accounts—an approach that reflects UBA’s pan-African footprint and diverse customer base.
UBA said the solution is built on strong privacy and compliance standards, aligning with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The bank noted that this framework provides enhanced data protection and legal certainty for international and diaspora customers, boosting confidence in the onboarding process.
Unlike traditional commercial bank account openings that often require physical branch visits, paper documentation and in-person biometric capture, the new platform allows customers to upload documents, complete digital Know-Your-Customer (KYC) checks and enrol immediately on UBA’s digital channels.
The bank added that the platform delivers fintech-level speed and convenience while retaining the security and regulatory depth of a licensed financial institution.
To open an account, customers visit aop.ubagroup.com, select “Open a Savings Account,” enter their Bank Verification Number (BVN), complete facial verification, confirm a one-time password, provide personal details, upload required documents and add a digital signature—after which an account number is issued instantly.
Shamsideen Fashola, Group Head, Retail and Digital Banking, said the launch underscores UBA’s mission to democratise access to financial services through technology.
“This fully digital solution removes traditional barriers and makes it easy for anyone, whether on the continent or in the diaspora, to open an account in minutes,” he said, adding that the platform combines convenience, compliance, speed and accessibility.
Also commenting, Alero Ladipo, Group Head, Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communication, said the bank designed the platform to meet modern customer expectations without compromising regulatory standards.
“We have blended industry-leading digital onboarding with robust privacy and compliance, ensuring a seamless experience that matches global best practices,” she said.
UBA operates in 20 African countries, as well as the United Kingdom, the United States, France and the United Arab Emirates, providing retail, commercial and institutional banking services. The Group serves more than 50 million customers globally and employs about 30,000 people, positioning it among the largest employers in Africa’s financial sector.
