The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists across Nigeria to drive carefully because of the current hazy weather, which is reducing visibility on major roads and increasing the risk of accidents.
The FRSC said the dust haze, caused by seasonal weather conditions, makes it harder for drivers to see clearly while driving.
In a statement released on Monday, the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, said drivers must strictly follow traffic rules to stay safe.
According to the statemrrent, poor visibility caused by the haze can easily lead to road crashes if drivers are not careful.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, also warned that reduced visibility slows drivers’ reaction time, making speeding very dangerous.
He advised motorists to:
Reduce speed and obey speed limits, especially on affected highways
Keep a safe distance from other vehicles to allow enough reaction time
Ensure headlights, tail lights, and brake lights are working properly and turned on, even during the day when visibility is poor
Drivers were also warned to avoid dangerous behaviours such as wrong overtaking, speeding, and distracted driving.
The FRSC urged road users to report emergencies through its toll-free number, 122.
The Corps assured Nigerians that its patrol teams are on alert to monitor traffic, enforce safety rules, and assist motorists when needed.
The warning comes as harmattan haze continues across the country in January 2026.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted sunny but hazy weather from Monday to Wednesday in many parts of Nigeria, including the north-central region.
