The Kano State Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Ibrahim Umar (rtd), has resigned his appointment with immediate effect, following the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Umar disclosed his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the governor on Monday, citing a strained political relationship between Governor Yusuf and his long-time mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as the basis for stepping aside.

In the letter, Umar expressed gratitude to the governor for the confidence reposed in him, recalling his initial appointment as Director-General of the Special Services Directorate in June 2023 and his subsequent elevation to Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services.

“It has been a distinct honour and privilege to be entrusted with the duty of ensuring the safety and security of our beloved Kano State under your leadership,” he said.

However, the retired Air Vice Marshal noted that recent political developments made his continued stay in office untenable.

“Following the recent turn of events, I believe it is in the best interest of the state and the administration that I step aside from this role. This decision, though difficult, is made after careful consideration,” he stated.

Umar emphasised that his service was guided by the ideals of Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which he said are anchored on justice, discipline and service to the people.

He thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve and pledged his continued support to the government and people of Kano State.

“I assure you of my continued support to the government and people of Kano State, as well as its goals for a safe, stronger and more prosperous Kano,” the letter read.

He concluded by praying for divine guidance for the governor and blessings for Kano State and Nigeria.

Meanwhile, investigations by our correspondent revealed that Umar’s resignation is part of a growing wave of exits by senior political appointees in the state following the governor’s defection. Those who have reportedly resigned include the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya; the Commissioner for Special Duties; and the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, who is the son of Senator Kwankwaso, among others.
