AFCON Fallout: FIFA reacts to calls to ban Senegal from 2026 World Cup

FIFA has signalled that it will not back calls to exclude Senegal from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as African football authorities continue disciplinary proceedings over the Teranga Lions’ conduct during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
The controversy followed Senegal’s protest on the pitch after a disputed penalty decision in the AFCON final, an action that drew widespread criticism and prompted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to open formal investigations.
While CAF has condemned what it described as “unacceptable behaviour” by some players and officials, world football’s governing body appears reluctant to escalate the matter to a global tournament ban.
According to reports, FIFA believes that sanctions should remain within CAF’s jurisdiction and be limited to proportionate disciplinary measures rather than collective punishment that could affect World Cup qualification.
Sources familiar with the situation say FIFA is monitoring developments but does not consider a World Cup ban an appropriate response under existing regulations.
CAF, meanwhile, is expected to deliver its ruling shortly after reviewing match footage and hearing from Senegalese officials. Possible penalties reportedly include heavy fines and suspensions for individuals involved, including head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw and select players.
Calls for harsher punishment have emerged in some quarters. Moroccan lawyer Adil Mouline publicly urged CAF to strip Senegal of their AFCON title and press FIFA to bar the team from the 2026 World Cup. However, such demands appear unlikely to gain traction at FIFA headquarters.
“The focus is on accountability without undermining the integrity of global competitions,” a football official was quoted as saying, reflecting FIFA’s position on the matter.
Senegal’s representatives, including officials of the Senegalese Football Federation and legal counsel, appeared before CAF’s disciplinary panel earlier this week. A decision is expected within the stipulated 48-hour window.
As the football world awaits CAF’s verdict, FIFA’s stance suggests that Senegal’s World Cup ambitions remain intact, with any punishment set to be confined to African football’s disciplinary framework rather than the global stage.
