Lawmakers in the Lagos House of Assembly have called for urgent intervention for rescue of a Prospective Corps Member (PCM), Miss Lateefah Binuyo, who was abducted in Kogi State on January 22..

Binuyo, a recent Mass Communication graduate of Kwara State Polytechnic was on her way to the NYSC orientation camp in Taraba when she was abducted.

She is said to be her mother’s only child.

The call for the urgent rescue of Binuyo followed motion of urgent public importance, raised by Miss Omolara Olumegbon, Chairman, House Committee on Women Affairs at the plenary of the House of Thursday.

Olumegbon, who disclosed that the abductors had demanded a ransom of ₦30,000,000 urged the house to write to the Federal Government to strengthen security measures for PCM travelling to their various states of deployment.

She also urged the house to formally engage Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene by liaising with the Kogi government to ensure safe rescue of the victim.

Giving his contribution, Mr Noheem Adams, praised President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to improving security of lives and property across the country.

Adams, the Majority Leader of the house, noted that the current security situation had shown significant improvement, compared to previous administrations.

Mr Stephen Ogundipe also commended the Nigerian military for its efforts in maintaining national security.

Ogundipe also appealed to the governor to engage with his Kogi counterpart to facilitate swift intervention.

In addition, Mr Tobun Abiodun suggested that the house, through the National Assembly, should write to the Director-General of the NYSC to review deployment procedures.

Tobun said this was particularly the posting of PCM to distant and high-risk areas, in order to minimise exposure to avoidable dangers.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, noted that at a time when some people were unwilling to pursue education, it was painful that young Nigerians, who had completed their studies and ready
to serve the nation were exposed to threats such as kidnapping.

Obasa emphasised the need to engage the NYSC Director-General on the responsibility of ensuring safety and security of corps members from the point of travel to their places of deployment and back to their families.

The speaker further stated that while he was confident that the Sanwo-Olu led administration had already taken steps on the matter, efforts should be intensified by also liaising
with the Kogi government, as suggested by members.

He said the house will also write to the Inspector-General of Police to intervene in the case and prevent future occurrences. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
