Yeni Kuti, daughter of Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has spoken against the trend of comparing contemporary artists with her late father.
Yeni, while speaking in an interview with Arise News, spoke about Fela’s relevance despite him being dead for nearly three decades.
She explained that comparisons can’t have an effect on Fela’s relevance and greatness, urging young artists to limit their comparisons to their peers.
“If you’re still talking about him 29 years after his death and you are comparing, you are comparing yourself with someone who has been gone 29 years. Compare yourself with your peers and leave him. Leave our legends alone,” Yeni stated.
