Renowned gospel artiste Mike Abdul has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding tattoos in Christianity, stating that tattoos do not dishonour the human body.

Abdul made the remarks following public reactions to a recent tattoo spotted on popular cleric Kingsley Okonkwo, which sparked widespread discussion among Christians on social media.

In a post shared on his Instagram page, Mike Abdul argued that tattoos have existed for centuries and were historically used for identity, memory, status, covenant, and storytelling across ancient cultures.

According to him, the presence of a tattoo does not defile the body, stressing that what truly matters is the meaning and conviction behind the mark rather than the mark itself.

“Tattoos don’t dishonour the body. What dishonours a temple is not the writing on the walls; what matters is what the mark points to, not the mark itself,” Abdul wrote.

He further emphasised that God is more concerned about the condition of a person’s heart than their outward appearance.

“God reads hearts, not skin. Ink without conviction is decoration. Ink with conviction is remembrance. If a tattoo leads you closer to gratitude, identity, or reverence, it has served a good purpose for you,” he added.

The gospel singer concluded that faith should not be measured by outward symbols but by inward transformation.

“Faith is not proven by unmarked skin, but by transformed lives,” Abdul stated.

Abdul’s comments come amid criticism from some Christians who argued that Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo’s tattoo dishonours the body as God’s temple, while others have defended the cleric, insisting that no scripture expressly forbids tattoos.’
