The Lagos State Government has announced a comprehensive traffic diversion plan ahead of repair works on Apongbon Bridge and its adjoining service lanes, urging motorists to cooperate with traffic officials during the six-week exercise.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement on Wednesday, said the diversion became necessary to allow the Federal Ministry of Works carry out repairs on failed asphalt sections of the ramp and service lane linking Inner Marina to Apongbon Bridge, as well as portions of the bridge on both inbound and outbound lanes.
Osiyemi stated that the repair works would commence on Thursday, 5 February, and run until Thursday, 19 March, 2026, beginning with the Apongbon service lane.
He explained that sections of the affected roads would be temporarily closed to traffic to ensure the safety of motorists and enable the smooth execution of the project.
He said that for inbound Apongbon traffic during the rehabilitation of the service lane, motorists approaching from Inner Marina would be required to proceed to the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout, connect to Adeniji Adele Road, pass through Ebute Ero and use the ramp to Apongbon/Eko Bridge to continue their journeys.
Osiyemi added that traffic coming from TBS, Third Mainland Bridge and Victoria Island would continue through Apongbon Bridge to Eko Bridge.
According to him, during repairs on the main carriageway of Apongbon Bridge, motorists from TBS, Third Mainland Bridge and Victoria Island would ramp down at the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout near UBA, proceed via Inner Marina, connect to the Apongbon Bridge service lane and continue onto Eko Bridge.
Osiyemi noted that once repairs on the inbound section are completed, construction activities would shift to the outbound lanes of Apongbon Bridge.
He further explained that for outbound traffic during the rehabilitation of the Apongbon service lane along Chapel Street, motorists heading from Eko Bridge to Inner Marina would be diverted through Ebute Ero Ramp, Adeniji Adele Road and the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout.
He added that traffic moving from Eko Bridge to Outer Marina, Victoria Island and Third Mainland Bridge would maintain a through movement on Apongbon Bridge.
Osiyemi stated that during repairs on the outbound main carriageway, motorists bound for Outer Marina, CMS, Victoria Island and Third Mainland Bridge would be diverted through Ebute Ero Ramp, Leventis and Outer Marina/CMS, while vehicles heading to Inner Marina would ramp down through Chapel Street to the Apongbon under-bridge roundabout.
He urged motorists to exercise patience and comply with all traffic management measures put in place during the repair period, stressing that the temporary closures and diversions were essential to achieving a durable repair of the bridge.
Osiyemi added that traffic management personnel would be deployed to guide road users and minimise inconvenience throughout the duration of the works.
