Quick Read

This is different from what happened to fellow Nigerian Kelechi Iheanacho, whose registration at Sevilla in 2024 was delayed due to salary cap issues.

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has been officially registered by La Liga, making him eligible to play his first league match for Atlético Madrid.

His registration was confirmed early on Friday when his name appeared on La Liga’s official squad list. Earlier checks did not include him, which means the process was completed just hours before confirmation.

With this clearance, Lookman can now feature in Atlético Madrid’s La Liga clash against Real Betis at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday.

The 27-year-old made a strong impression in his first appearance for Atlético Madrid on Thursday in the Copa del Rey. He scored a goal and provided an assist as Atlético thrashed Real Betis 5–0 in Seville.

La Liga registration is a strict process. Clubs must meet financial fair play rules and salary limits before new players can be approved. Until a player is officially registered, he cannot play in league matches, even if he has already featured in other competitions.

Lookman’s quick approval shows Atlético Madrid’s strong financial position.

This is different from what happened to fellow Nigerian Kelechi Iheanacho, whose registration at Sevilla in 2024 was delayed due to salary cap issues.

For Atlético Madrid, Lookman’s availability is a major boost. His speed, creativity, and attacking threat stood out in his debut, and fans will be hoping he delivers another strong performance in front of the home supporters as the club continues its La Liga campaign.
