Referee who handled Nigeria’s AFCON clash suspended

Quick Read

The federation stated that the suspension has no fixed end date. Guirat will undergo further review and assessment before any decision is made about his return to officiating.

Tunisian referee Haitham Guirat has been suspended indefinitely by the Tunisian Football Federation after making a serious mistake during a domestic league match.

Guirat, who officiated several games at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), was involved in a controversial incident in a Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 match. The federation confirmed the suspension on Monday.

The referees’ committee described the incident as a “serious refereeing mistake” and said the decision was taken immediately to protect the integrity of the league.

Although the federation did not give full details of what happened during the match, the incident caused strong criticism and raised concerns about the quality of officiating.

The suspension has also renewed discussions about Guirat’s performances at AFCON 2025. He served as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during Nigeria’s third-place match against Egypt, which the Super Eagles won on penalties.

The federation stated that the suspension has no fixed end date. Guirat will undergo further review and assessment before any decision is made about his return to officiating.
