Lagos HoS vows stronger welfare for Retirees

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to prompt payment of retirement benefits and sustained welfare support for former civil servants, declaring that retirement should mark “renewed purpose” rather than decline.

Speaking at a send-forth ceremony held at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, apologised for the delay in hosting officers who retired in the second, third and fourth quarters of 2025, assuring them that government’s appreciation for their service remained intact.

“Permit me, on behalf of the Lagos State Government, to express sincere apologies for holding this ceremony very late. It ought to have been held last year, but the circumstances beyond our control caused the delay. While the delay is deeply regretted, the Government’s appreciation for your years of meritorious service remains unwavering,” he said.

Agoro outlined targeted initiatives designed to guarantee financial security and post-service engagement for retirees, which he said included prompt payment of retirement benefits, regular interactive sessions with the Head of Service, bi-monthly webinars on financial literacy and wellness, healthcare initiatives under ILERA EKO, enrolment in the Lagos State Single Social Register, and the establishment of recreation and wellness centres.

He urged the retirees not to see their exit from active service as the end of their relevance, noting that their experience remains critical to governance and community development.

“Let me implore you not to see your retirement as signifying the end of your relevance to our Public Service and the State in general. No doubt, your wealth of experience is still very relevant to the development of our Public Service and the State, so, be rest assured we would tap into it,” Agoro stated.

The Head of Service also credited the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the support of Obafemi Kadri Hamzat for sustaining policies aimed at protecting the dignity of retirees.

He urged the former officers to remain mentors and active contributors within their communities, stressing that government’s post-service framework is structured to ensure stability, healthy ageing and continued societal impact.
