LAWMA denies unpaid compensation claim

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has denied allegations that the Lagos State Government failed to compensate the family of a late highway sanitation worker.

The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) had alleged that compensation promised to the family of Mrs. Aishat Muhammed, who died on May 7, 2025, was unpaid.

The authority said that following the incident, it engaged the family through its operational partner, Highway Managers, which directly employed the deceased.

It stated that after discussions, a mutually agreed compensation arrangement was reached with the family.

LAWMA disclosed that a total of ₦4,340,000 was paid to the deceased’s son as full and final compensation.

According to the authority, the payment covered insurance settlement, burial support and additional financial assistance, including salary support extended after the incident.

It added that the agreed compensation was duly received and the matter concluded based on the understanding reached with the family.

LAWMA expressed sadness over the incident and extended sympathies to the bereaved family.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare, safety and protection of sanitation workers across the state.

It urged media organisations to seek clarification before publication to ensure accurate and responsible reporting.
