Police nab suspects over human trafficking

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with alleged human trafficking and other related offences.
In a statement on Friday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, said the E Divisional Police Headquarters is investigating a case involving criminal conspiracy, human trafficking, assault, extortion, and defamation.
According to the statement, a 20-year-old woman, Ebere Wilson of Wuntin Dada, reported that she was assaulted and had her mobile phone, a blue Tecno Spark 4, taken by Gloria Joseph on February 11, 2026.
Investigations reportedly revealed that Joseph allegedly conspired with Light Mandis to lure Wilson and her friend, Mercy, to Ghana for prostitution.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further probe, while the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the suspects be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
Human trafficking continues to be a serious concern in Bauchi State. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) notes that traffickers often exploit poverty and false employment promises to target women and young people.
NAPTIP recorded at least 37 human trafficking cases in Bauchi State over the past year. The agency has secured convictions against traffickers and continues to run awareness campaigns to educate communities about the dangers of trafficking.
