Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes once again asserted East African dominance at the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon 2026, with Ezra Kipchumba Kering of Kenya claiming a commanding victory in the men’s elite race and Meseret Dinke of Ethiopia powering to the women’s title on Saturday, February 14, in Lagos.
Kering crossed the finish line in an impressive 2:11:55, showcasing exceptional focus, pacing, and endurance on the demanding urban course.
The Kenyan runner’s performance was hailed as a “masterclass” by organizers Access Bank, who celebrated the dramatic sprint finish in their official announcement: “Ezra Kipchumba Kering of Kenya storms across the line in 02:11:55 to claim victory… This is greatness in motion.”
In the women’s category, Dinke dominated with a strong finish in 2:37:36, securing the top spot and extending Ethiopia’s successful streak in recent editions of the race.
The results echo the 2025 outcomes, where Kenyan and Ethiopian runners also topped the podium, showing the region’s continued supremacy in long-distance road running on the continent.
The marathon, now in its 11th edition and sponsored by Access Bank, drew thousands of participants from across Nigeria and internationally, blending elite competition with mass participation.
While East Africans claimed the overall elite crowns, Nigerian athletes delivered strong showings in the local category: Boyi Solomon Nyango emerged as the first Nigerian man to cross the line in 2:25:32, and Deborah Pam Badung led the Nigerian women with a solid 2:55:46 finish.
The event continues to grow in stature as one of Africa’s premier marathons, offering substantial prize purses, including $50,000 for elite winners and serving as a platform for both global talent and homegrown stars.
