FIFA is set to announce its final decision on Monday, February 16, regarding Nigeria’s official protest against Democratic Republic of the Congo over player eligibility.

In December, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) submitted a formal complaint to FIFA.

The federation argued that at least six players who represented DR Congo in the 2025 African playoff final in November were not eligible to play.

According to the NFF, the players had recently switched their nationality and did not meet the required conditions to feature in such an important match.

The playoff final ended 1–1 after regulation time, with both teams battling intensely for a place in the next stage.

However, DR Congo eventually won 4–3 on penalties, leaving the Super Eagles heartbroken and out of immediate qualification contention.

Speaking on the matter, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, expressed confidence in Nigeria’s case.

He stated that the federation carefully reviewed the situation before taking action and would not have approached FIFA if the evidence was not strong.

Sanusi emphasized that the NFF believes the rules were not properly followed and that justice should prevail.

If FIFA rules in favour of Nigeria, the Super Eagles will be granted the opportunity to participate in the Intercontinental Play-Off tournament scheduled for March in Mexico.

That competition will feature teams battling for the final qualification spots.
Winning the tournament would secure Nigeria one of the remaining African tickets to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The global football event will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marking the first time three countries will organize the tournament together.
