Real Madrid secured a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Benfica in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League knockout round playoff tie at the Estádio da Luz on Tuesday.
The goal was a moment of individual brilliance from Vinicius Junior.
However, the match was overshadowed by serious allegations of racist abuse directed at the Brazilian forward, leading to an 11-minute suspension shortly after his goal.
The game remained goalless at halftime despite chances for both sides. Real Madrid dominated possession in spells, with Kylian Mbappé, Arda Güler, and Vinicius Junior testing Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
Benfica showed resilience and created opportunities through players like Gianluca Prestianni, Rafa Silva, and Fredrik Aursnes, but Thibaut Courtois was equal to their efforts.

The ball soared into the top right corner, leaving Trubin helpless and giving Real Madrid the lead.
Moments after the goal, chaos ensued. Vinicius reported alleged racist abuse, reportedly from Benfica’s Prestianni during an exchange near the corner flag, where the Argentine player was seen covering his mouth with his shirt before speaking.
The forward appeared distressed, spoke with teammates and coach Arbeloa, and referee Letexier invoked UEFA’s anti-racism protocol by crossing his arms in the recognized gesture. Play was halted for around 10-11 minutes as officials addressed the incident, amid reports of racist chants from sections of the home crowd.
The match resumed, but tensions remained high. Jose Mourinho received two yellow cards in quick succession around the 85th minute, one off the field, resulting in his dismissal from the technical area.
Vinicius was booked for his celebration, and Mbappé also picked up a yellow. Late substitutions, including Brahim Diaz for Arda Güler and Thiago Pitarch for Eduardo Camavinga, helped Real Madrid manage the game in added time, which stretched to 12 minutes.
Benfica pushed for an equalizer, with efforts from Sidny Lopes Cabral and others, but Real Madrid’s defense held firm.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 win for the visitors, giving them a slim advantage heading into the second leg at the Bernabéu.
