A heavy downpour of rain fell in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, at night on Tuesday, 17 February, bringing succour to its weather-beaten residents. It was the first major rain in the temperate city this year.
The rain started suddenly at about 9:30 pm as the city was getting set for sleep. In the absence of electricity, most residents had resigned to fate, halfclad as they sat in front of their houses or such other open spaces to take fresh air.
The rain, which was not preceded by a heavy cloud or thunderstorm, began without warning, forcing excited residents to take coverage and remained indoors for about one hour that it lasted. The rain forced some people to stay out longer than usual.
Although there have been reports of rainfall in other parts of the state since the beginning of the year, Lokoja, famous for being the meeting point of Rivers Niger and Benue, has been excluded, forcing an excruciating heat and water scarcity on its otherwise radiant population.
“We thank God for the rain and the positive change in weather. I’m glad because of prospects on the farm and the very unfriendly heat we have been enduring. I am happy about the downpour, and moreover, it was peaceful.” An elderly farmer said.
The rain is expected to bring life back to the city.
