Nigeria is still holding on to hope that a favourable ruling will emerge soon in its dispute with DR Congo over the November 2025 World Cup playoff, as uncertainty continues to surround the Super Eagles’ fate.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally challenged the eligibility of several Congolese players who featured in the decisive tie, escalating a case that could potentially reshape Africa’s representation at the 2026 tournament.
The petition, submitted to FIFA, questions the documentation and clearance process that allowed the players to represent DR Congo.
The controversy stems from the two-legged playoff clash in November 2025, where DR Congo edged Nigeria on aggregate to seal qualification for the intercontinental playoffs. The result ended the Super Eagles’ qualification campaign, prompting the NFF to file a protest shortly after the final whistle.
According to the NFF, at least six DR Congo players allegedly did not meet eligibility requirements under their country’s domestic laws at the time of the match.
Among those referenced in public discussions were Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, both of whom previously represented England at youth level before switching international allegiance.
The federation argues that irregularities may have occurred during the clearance process and that incomplete documentation could have been submitted when approval was sought for the players’ participation.
DR Congo, however, has rejected the claims, insisting that FIFA’s regulations on sporting nationality rather than domestic citizenship provisions govern player eligibility in international competitions.
Having advanced from the African qualification pathway and defeated Nigeria in the playoff round, DR Congo secured the continent’s slot in the Intercontinental Playoff tournament scheduled to take place in Mexico next month.
While FIFA has confirmed that the matter remains under review, no timeline has been provided for a final decision, leaving Nigeria’s World Cup hopes hanging in the balance as fans await clarity.
