President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to embrace peace, unity and forgiveness as the 2026 Ramadan fasting period begins, noting that its coincidence with the Christian Lenten season presents a unique opportunity for national reconciliation.

The President made the call on Wednesday while declaring open the 2026 Ramadan Tafsir at the State House Mosque in Abuja, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu said the overlap of the two major religious observances should encourage collaboration and harmony among citizens across religious divides.

He explained that Ramadan offers Muslims a chance to draw closer to God, extend kindness to others and promote love and faith within the society.

“As we start this Ramadan, the principal thing is to get closer to God, to do goodness to people, to share love and faith and to forgive one another,” he said.

The President also called on Nigerians to pray for the nation and work together toward nation-building beyond the fasting period. He expressed hope that divine guidance would help address the country’s challenges, including terrorism and banditry.

Tinubu further appealed for understanding and forgiveness in line with Islamic teachings, praying that the country would experience peace and stability.

In his sermon, the Chief Imam of the State House Mosque, Sheikh Abdulwaheed Abubakar Suleiman, prayed for good health and strength for the President as he continues efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerians.

The event was attended by several government officials, including the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; and the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, among others.
