Ibori’s daughter evades attack as APC congress turns violent in Ethiope

Quick Read

The exercise, which was earlier slated to hold at Oghara Township Stadium, was reportedly shifted to Ovade within the council area, a move said to have triggered tension among party stakeholders.

Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, the lawmaker representing Ethiope Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, on Saturday narrowly escaped harm after violence broke out during the All Progressives Congress (APC) congress in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State.

The exercise, which was earlier slated to hold at Oghara Township Stadium, was reportedly shifted to Ovade within the council area, a move said to have triggered tension among party stakeholders.

Trouble started shortly after Ibori-Suenu arrived at the new venue, as suspected thugs allegedly attacked party members, leaving several persons injured in the process. Some of the victims were reportedly rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Eyewitnesses said the federal lawmaker was unable to gain access to the congress ground due to security concerns, following threats to her safety. However, security operatives attached to her detail ensured she was safely escorted from the scene.

Ibori-Suenu is the daughter of former Delta State Governor, James Onanefe Ibori.

Meanwhile, some aggrieved party members have linked the disruption to alleged political interests within the state, mentioning Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former House of Representatives member Ben Igbakpa. As of the time of filing this report, those named had yet to react to the allegations.

In her reaction, Ibori-Suenu urged supporters to remain calm and avoid any action that could further escalate the situation, while calling on security agencies to step in and restore order.

There were also reports of lingering tension across parts of the local government area, with party members demanding increased security presence to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
