Pope Leo XIV has described peace in Ukraine as an “urgent necessity” that must not be delayed, as the country approaches the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

Speaking during his Sunday Angelus address at St Peter’s Square in the Vatican, the pontiff appealed for an immediate ceasefire and renewed dialogue.

“Peace cannot be postponed. It is an urgent necessity that must find space in hearts and be translated into responsible decisions,” he said.

“I strongly renew my appeal: may the weapons fall silent, may the bombings cease, may a ceasefire be reached without delay, and may dialogue be strengthened to open the way to peace,” he added.

Ukraine will mark four years since Russia launched its invasion on February 24, 2022, a conflict that has devastated cities, displaced millions and led to heavy casualties on both sides.

Russia currently controls nearly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory and continues its offensive, particularly in the eastern Donbas region.

Meanwhile, the United States has been pushing diplomatic efforts to end the war, holding multiple rounds of talks in recent weeks, though without a significant breakthrough.
