President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday formally tasked the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, with restoring peace and reinforcing security across the country, assuring him of unwavering presidential backing.

The charge was delivered at the State House in Abuja during the decoration ceremony of Disu as Acting IGP, following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun.

The appointment remains subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate. The council is scheduled to meet next week.

“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said.

Describing the appointment as coming at a delicate juncture in the nation’s security landscape, Tinubu urged the new police chief to restore public confidence in the Force and deepen collaboration with other security agencies.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” the President added.

Tinubu further directed Disu to advance the security pillars embedded in his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in the Acting IGP’s discipline, operational background and leadership capacity.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President said.

Reaffirming his optimism about the country’s trajectory, Tinubu maintained that Nigeria would overcome its current challenges under committed leadership.

The President also acknowledged the service of the outgoing IGP, Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony alongside his spouse.

“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” he said.

He encouraged Egbetokun to remain available to provide guidance to his successor and extended goodwill to him and his family.

“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” Tinubu stated.

Tinubu called on all security stakeholders to work in unison to protect lives and property at what he described as a critical period for the nation.

Among dignitaries present were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori; AIG Hakeem Odumosu (rtd); senior government officials; as well as the parents and family members of the Acting IGP.
