President of the Centre for Change, Dr Joe Odumakin, has applauded the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, describing the decision as a fitting response to Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.

In a statement issued on Friday, Odumakin said the appointment has already drawn commendation for President Bola Tinubu, noting that Disu’s track record in policing makes him well suited for the role.

“The new Police helmsman has paid his dues,” she stated, recalling Disu’s tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command between 2015 and 2021.

According to Odumakin, crime rates were reduced significantly during his six-year leadership of the RRS, a period she described as marked by proactive and effective policing.

She also referenced his service as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, saying both assignments reflected his operational competence and crime-fighting acumen.

Odumakin further highlighted Disu’s leadership of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), which he assumed after Abba Kyari.

She noted that he operated “quietly and seamlessly,” discharging his responsibilities with professionalism.

“There is no doubt that this time around, President Tinubu put a round peg in a round hole to confront the nation’s lingering security crisis,” she said.

Expressing optimism about the new police chief’s tenure, Odumakin said Nigerians expect him to demonstrate the “vim and vigour” required to restore public confidence and reassure citizens that the security of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government.
