Tragedy struck on the Nanka-Agulu Road in Anambra State on Friday night as four women lost their lives in a multi-vehicle crash at Agulu Lake in Anaocha Local Government Area.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the fatal crash involved four vehicles, a Toyota Hiace bus (HAL676YG), a shuttle bus (UKP274YA), a trailer and a Toyota Hilux, the latter two without registration numbers.

Anambra FRSC Sector Commander, Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, who spoke to journalists in Awka on Saturday, attributed the crash to excessive speed and loss of control.

According to her, preliminary findings by the FRSC rescue team from the Nanka outpost indicated that the Toyota Hiace bus was descending a hill at high speed when the driver lost control and rammed into three other vehicles.

“There were no eyewitnesses to the crash as all the drivers fled the scene,” Asekhauno said.

A total of 19 persons were involved in the collision, including six male adults, 10 female adults and three male children.

“The crash claimed the lives of four women, while five others sustained injuries,” the sector commander added.

The injured victims were rushed to St. Joseph Hospital, Adazi, for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited in the hospital morgue.

To ease the resulting gridlock, FRSC officials created an alternative route for motorists.

Asekhauno commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads.

“Drive safely to stay alive; safety is everyone’s responsibility,” she advised.
