A cloud of uncertainty is hanging over Iran’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a development that could unexpectedly brighten Nigeria’s chances of making the global showpiece.

The president of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, Mehdi Taj, has revealed that the country’s involvement in the tournament is now in serious doubt following the escalating military confrontation involving the United States and Israel.

Speaking to Iranian sports outlet Varzesh3, Taj admitted that the recent attacks and the tense political climate have made it extremely difficult for the national team to prepare with confidence or optimism for the World Cup.

According to him, after the bombardments and the widening conflict, it is hard to expect players, officials, and supporters to look forward to competing in the United States under normal circumstances. The remarks came as tensions between Iran and Israel intensified, with the United States also drawn into the crisis.

Iran has already been drawn in Group G of the 2026 tournament and is scheduled to play its group matches in Los Angeles and Seattle.

The competition will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19 under the supervision of FIFA.

However, the worsening diplomatic standoff between Washington and Tehran, coupled with previous travel restrictions imposed on Iranian citizens, has raised fresh concerns about whether the team will be able to enter the United States to fulfill its fixtures.
