Real Madrid’s push for the La Liga crown suffered a significant setback on Sunday night as Getafe stunned the Bernabéu with a 1–0 victory, failing to keep tabs on leader Barcelona.
In a contest where Madrid dominated possession and created a stream of opportunities, it was Getafe who delivered the decisive blow. Martín Satriano struck in the 39th minute, firing a first-time effort into the top-right corner after finding space inside the area, silencing the 65,104 spectators in attendance.
The defeat leaves Madrid’s title momentum dented at a crucial stage of the season, with rivals poised to capitalise on dropped points.
Madrid controlled large stretches of the game but struggled to convert pressure into goals. Vinícius Júnior forced early saves from goalkeeper David Soria, while Gonzalo García squandered a clear chance from close range.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Aurélien Tchouaméni also tested Soria, who produced a series of composed stops to preserve Getafe’s advantage.
Rodrygo, introduced in the second half, came closest to an equaliser with a header that drifted just wide, before Franco Mastantuono’s late effort was denied in stoppage time.
Despite relentless attacking waves, Madrid’s finishing lacked the cutting edge required to overturn Satriano’s clinical strike.
As the clock ticked down, tensions escalated. Madrid saw multiple players booked, including Vinícius Júnior and Tchouaméni, before Mastantuono was sent off deep into added time. Getafe were also reduced to ten men after Adrián Liso received a second yellow card.
