A group called Future Platform-Diaspora Group has sent a legal notice to social media influencer Martin Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, over alleged defamatory comments about Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The group, through its convener Austine Dafe and publicity secretary Kunle Olaosebikan, said it is concerned about increasing cyberbullying and attacks on people’s reputations online. They warned that spreading unverified claims could have serious legal consequences.

While recognizing the importance of free speech in Nigeria, the group said it must be exercised responsibly. Public statements that can harm someone’s reputation should be backed by credible evidence, especially on widely used digital platforms.

“Freedom of speech does not cover cyberbullying, defamation, or spreading unverified claims that damage reputations,” Dafe said. He added that online platforms should not be used for character attacks without proper proof.

The group said people with large online followings have both legal and moral responsibilities. Statements that lower someone’s reputation could lead to legal action.

They called on Otse to immediately stop making defamatory statements about Tinubu and to issue a full public retraction and formal apology on the same platforms where the comments appeared.

The group also stated that it may pursue legal action under Nigerian law, including civil suits and claims for damages, if the alleged defamation continues.

Finally, they clarified that their action is not meant to stop lawful criticism but to ensure accountability in online discussions.

They urged stronger enforcement of cybercrime and defamation laws to protect personal reputation online.
