MultiChoice, the company behind DStv and GOtv, has announced plans to close its streaming service, Showmax, after more than a decade of operation.
The company informed its customers on March 5, 2026, that the decision comes after a strategic review aimed at improving MultiChoice’s digital services and ensuring long-term sustainability.
The streaming sector has become highly competitive, and this move is part of the company’s effort to strengthen its overall offerings.
Showmax was launched in South Africa in 2015 and later expanded to several African countries, attracting millions of subscribers with movies, series, and original content.
While MultiChoice has not provided a specific date for the shutdown, it assured users that the service will continue for now, and no immediate action is needed from subscribers.
A statement from the company read: “Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has decided to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future.
We understand this news may raise questions. Showmax subscribers are a priority for us, and we are working on plans to ensure clear communication and a smooth transition when the time comes.”
The company promised to share detailed information about the closure timeline and any steps subscribers may need to take well in advance.
MultiChoice also stressed that its focus on customer experience remains strong.
“Streaming continues to be central to our strategy. We will keep investing in premium content, technological innovation, and partnerships to give our customers the best entertainment experience possible,” the statement added.
This announcement comes shortly after Canal+ completed its acquisition of MultiChoice for $3 billion. The company has not yet disclosed whether the Showmax shutdown will affect its employees or what alternatives will be available for current subscribers.
The closure marks the end of an 11-year chapter for Showmax, a platform that played a major role in Africa’s streaming landscape since its launch.
