U.S. President Donald Trump has said a full-scale invasion of Iran would be “a waste of time,” even as he called for the country to get a new leader who would “clean out everything.”

Trump made the remarks during an interview with NBC News amid rising tensions in the Middle East following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

According to him, while the United States wants political change in Iran, launching a ground invasion would not be necessary.

“It’s a waste of time. They’ve lost everything. They’ve lost their navy. They’ve lost everything they can lose,” Trump said.

He added that what Iran needs is a leader capable of rebuilding the country.

“We want them to have a good leader. We have some people who I think would do a good job,” he said, without mentioning any names.

Trump also reacted to comments by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, who warned that a U.S. ground invasion would be a disaster for Washington.

“We are waiting for them because we are confident that we can confront them, and that would be a big disaster for them,” Araghchi had said.

However, Trump dismissed the warning as a “wasted comment.”

His remarks came as tensions escalated after Iran launched one of its most intense attacks yet, firing drones and missiles toward Israel and U.S. allies in the Gulf region.

Smoke was reportedly seen rising over parts of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and near the Yas Marina area of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Earlier, Trump warned members of the Iranian military and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to surrender or face “guaranteed death.”

“I’m once again calling on all members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, the military and the police to lay down their arms,” he said.

“Accept immunity, we’ll give you immunity. You’ll be perfectly safe with total immunity or you’ll face absolutely guaranteed death.”

Meanwhile, attention has turned to who will replace the late Khamenei as Iran’s next supreme leader.

His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, is widely seen as a leading contender, although Trump suggested it was unlikely he would emerge as the country’s next leader.
