Troops in Borno State clashed with suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) after the insurgents attacked a military camp in Kukawa Local Government Area.

The attack, which happened on Monday, led to a heavy exchange of gunfire between the attackers and the military personnel stationed at the camp.

During the fight, the commanding officer of the camp was killed, and there were casualties on both sides.

Security sources said that after the gun battle, troops continued to secure and inspect the camp to ensure the area was safe.

They found several weapons and explosives left behind by the insurgents, including an AK-47 rifle, a BHT machine gun, PKT ammunition rounds, two mortar bombs, and four hand grenades.

Bloodstains and drag marks outside the camp indicated that some of the attackers were injured while trying to retreat.

In a separate incident, security forces intercepted an injured BHT fighter who was being brought to the camp. The fighter attempted to escape, which led to further gunfire before he was finally captured.

Security officials have assured the public that the situation is now under control. Troops are continuing operations in the area to track down insurgents who managed to flee after the attack. The authorities are also working to prevent further attacks on the camp and nearby communities.

This latest clash highlights the ongoing security challenges in Borno State, which has been a key area affected by insurgent activity in Nigeria.

The military has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to help maintain peace and safety in the region.

Troops continue to carry out follow-up operations to ensure that all insurgents involved are apprehended and that the security of the local population is not compromised.
