Atlético Madrid displayed a ruthless attacking performance on Tuesday to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 5–2 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match.
This has put the Spanish side in firm control of the tie.
The hosts dominated from the opening minutes at the Metropolitano Stadium, capitalising on defensive errors by the visitors to race into a commanding early lead.
Marcos Llorente opened the scoring after just six minutes when a mistake by Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský allowed Atletico to seize possession and finish calmly into the bottom corner.
The situation quickly worsened for the English side as Antoine Griezmann doubled Atletico’s advantage minutes later after defender Micky van de Ven slipped, allowing the French forward to convert.
Tottenham’s defensive collapse continued soon after when another error from Kinský gifted Atlético a third goal.
Julián Álvarez capitalised on the mistake and tapped into an empty net, forcing Spurs to substitute their goalkeeper just 17 minutes into the match.
Atlético extended their dominance in the 22nd minute when Robin Le Normand headed home to make it 4–0, completing a blistering start that effectively decided the contest before halftime.
Tottenham managed to respond through Pedro Porro, who pulled one back for the visitors before the break, but Diego Simeone’s side restored their cushion in the second half as Álvarez struck again to secure his brace and make it 5–1.
Dominic Solanke scored a late consolation for Spurs, but it did little to change the narrative of a match dominated by Atlético Madrid.
The emphatic victory gives Atlético a huge advantage ahead of the second leg in London and leaves Tottenham facing an uphill battle if they hope to keep their Champions League campaign alive.
