Monumental Narratives: The Artistic Philosophy Behind ‘The Legend of the Bozkurt’ – Abinoro Collins

Quick Read

At the core of Abinoro Akporode Collins’ practice lies a fascination with transformation physical, cultural, and symbolic.

At the core of Abinoro Akporode Collins’ practice lies a fascination with transformation physical, cultural, and symbolic.

His Ankara masterpiece, The Legend of the Bozkurt, encapsulates that philosophy. Over 3,000 pieces of stainless steel cutlery were meticulously cut, shaped, and welded to construct a triumphant wolf poised atop a geometric mountain.

The wolf a symbol of strength and origin in Turkish mythology becomes, in Collins’ hands, a meditation on resilience. The reflective steel surfaces catch light differently at every angle, suggesting movement and vitality.

What makes the work particularly compelling is its construction method. Known for armature-free sculpting, Collins achieves structural stability through calculated layering rather than hidden supports. The result is both visually powerful and technically impressive.

Organized by curator Beste Gürsu and supported by ASELSAN’s anniversary celebration, the symposium elevated scrap art from niche experimentation to monumental public discourse.

For Collins, the piece represents more than an international commission. It is evidence of how African contemporary artists can engage global heritage without losing their voice.

As his body of work expands, one thing remains constant: Abinoro Akporode Collins does not merely sculpt metal he sculpts meaning.
