The Nigerian government has begun efforts to evacuate its citizens from Iran as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East. The move is aimed at protecting Nigerians who wish to leave the country while the regional situation remains uncertain.
The development was confirmed by the head of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa. In a statement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, she explained that arrangements have been put in place to help Nigerians exit Iran safely.
According to her, officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran are assisting citizens who want to leave by escorting them to the border with Armenia. The process is being coordinated carefully to ensure that those leaving the country can travel without difficulties.
NiDCOM said embassy officials are collaborating with authorities in Armenia to facilitate the movement of evacuees across the border. Necessary support has also been arranged to receive Nigerians once they leave Iranian territory.
The commission noted that the evacuation effort highlights the government’s responsibility to safeguard its citizens living overseas, particularly during periods of instability. It added that the quick coordination between Nigerian and Armenian authorities helped create a safe pathway for those seeking to leave.
Dabiri-Erewa also reassured Nigerians that, at the moment, there have been no reports of any Nigerian being harmed as a result of the tensions in Iran. She stated that officials remain stationed at the border to assist arrivals and provide support where needed.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of its citizens abroad. Authorities say they are closely monitoring developments in the region and are prepared to take additional measures if the situation requires further action.
