According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Mack truck initially developed a mechanical fault on the bridge while heading inward the Secretariat.

Motorists on Wednesday were stranded in heavy traffic along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after a truck overturned on Otedola Bridge, spilling two containers onto the busy highway.

The incident caused a massive gridlock that stretched as far as Kara Bridge before authorities moved in to clear the obstruction.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Mack truck initially developed a mechanical fault on the bridge while heading inward the Secretariat.

The situation worsened when the vehicle overturned during a private recovery attempt, causing two 20-foot containers it was carrying to fall across the road and block traffic in both directions.

The agency said the obstruction paralysed movement along the expressway as commuters struggled through the traffic build-up during the morning rush.

In a statement on Wednesday, LASTMA confirmed that its officials moved swiftly to the scene to remove the containers and restore normal traffic flow.

“The two containerised boxes have been successfully recovered and removed from the roadway. Traffic is moving very fast. Our officers are still on the ground managing traffic and ensuring smooth vehicular movement,” the agency said.

LASTMA added that a high-capacity tow truck and recovery team were deployed to the scene to assist in removing the overturned vehicle and managing traffic during the operation.
