A dramatic security scare unfolded in the United States capital early Wednesday after a driver rammed a van into a security barricade close to the White House, prompting an immediate lockdown and heavy police presence across parts of downtown Washington, D.C.

The incident occurred shortly before 6:30 a.m. local time near the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and H Street Northwest, just north of the presidential complex and adjacent to Lafayette Square.

Authorities said the vehicle smashed into a temporary barrier protecting the perimeter of the White House security zone.

According to officials, officers of the United States Secret Service quickly moved to secure the area and detained the driver at the scene.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been made public, and investigators are currently questioning the individual to determine the motive behind the crash.

Following the collision, surrounding streets were temporarily shut down, with police vehicles, security agents and bomb disposal units deployed to examine the van and ensure it did not pose any further threat.

Authorities later confirmed that the vehicle was inspected and declared safe.

Officials also confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident, although the crash triggered significant disruption during the morning rush hour in Washington, D.C.

The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. assisted the Secret Service in managing the situation and controlling traffic while investigators worked at the scene.

Nearby White House entrances and surrounding roads were temporarily closed as a precaution while security checks were carried out.

Reports indicate that President Donald Trump was inside the White House complex at the time of the incident, though authorities said there was no immediate threat to the president or the building.

Security around key government sites in the United States has been heightened in recent weeks amid global tensions and ongoing conflicts abroad.

The crash therefore triggered a rapid and coordinated response from multiple security agencies.
