Sanwo-Olu noted that with the recent inauguration of the Board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, the state is now better positioned to regulate and expand electricity supply more effectively.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned key electrification projects in the Badagry axis, describing the intervention as a strategic investment that will deliver lasting benefits to residents and businesses in the border communities.
The projects include three HC tower crossings, the rehabilitation of 33KV distribution lines along the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridors, and the connection of 51 transformer substations, aimed at addressing longstanding electricity challenges in the area.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the governor, represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, said the state government was not merely unveiling power infrastructure but restoring confidence and unlocking economic opportunities for communities that had long struggled with poor electricity supply.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the administration’s THEMES+ Development Agenda, particularly its commitment to expanding energy access and building resilient infrastructure capable of driving economic growth across Lagos State.
Sanwo-Olu noted that with the recent inauguration of the Board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, the state is now better positioned to regulate and expand electricity supply more effectively.
“This intervention aligns strongly with our THEMES+ Development Agenda, particularly our commitment to expanding energy access and building resilient infrastructure that supports economic growth across every part of Lagos State,” he said.
He explained that beyond improving electricity supply, the project would enable traders to extend their business hours, artisans and small manufacturers to increase productivity, schools and healthcare facilities to operate more efficiently, and families to enjoy an improved quality of life.
The electrification initiative is expected to significantly strengthen power distribution across the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridors, providing improved and more stable electricity supply to thousands of homes, shops and businesses in the Badagry border communities.
The governor emphasised that Badagry remains a critical economic gateway, linking Nigeria to the Republic of Benin and the wider West African region, and therefore requires sustained investment in infrastructure to support trade, commerce and cross-border enterprise.
He congratulated residents of Gbaji, Seme, Owode, Apa and surrounding communities, urging them to take ownership of the infrastructure by protecting it from vandalism to ensure it serves the communities for many years.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, Hon. Sabur Akanbi Oluwa, described the project as evidence of the state government’s commitment to expanding reliable electricity access across Lagos.
Oluwa said the strengthened power infrastructure would stimulate economic activities, improve security and enhance the living standards of residents.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, explained that the project was implemented to tackle persistent electricity challenges affecting the communities, noting that the new infrastructure would boost distribution capacity and improve power supply.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources, Engr. Abiola Olowu, said the milestone reflects the state government’s determination to provide critical energy infrastructure that will enhance socio-economic development across the Badagry axis and Lagos State as a whole.
