The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Jabi, Abuja, on Wednesday granted bail to fertility specialist, Dr. John Abebe, following his arraignment on a three-count charge filed by the Nigeria Police Force.
The case was heard before Justice Fashola, who admitted the medical practitioner to bail after he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Dr. Abebe, alongside his firm, Joje Fertility Centre Limited, was arraigned by the police over allegations bordering on the disclosure of a patient’s confidential medical information.
During the proceedings on Wednesday, counsel to the first defendant, Marvin Omorogbe, moved an application urging the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms. In a brief ruling, the court granted the request.
Sources at the court confirmed that Dr. Abebe has since met the bail conditions and has been released.
The charge followed a petition by one Hassan Turaki, who alleged that the fertility specialist disclosed his wife’s medical report in a correspondence addressed to Dr. Abebe’s lawyer.
However, the management of Joje Fertility Centre Limited had earlier denied the allegation in a public statement, describing the petition and the subsequent charge as a smear campaign aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the medical practitioner.
The centre maintained that Dr. Abebe has maintained a record of professional excellence spanning more than three decades in medical practice.
After the arraignment, the court adjourned the matter to a later date for the prosecution to open its case.
