Real Madrid produced a dominant first-half display to defeat Manchester City 3–0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 playoff on Wednesday, with Federico Valverde scoring all three goals.
The Spanish giants struck early to seize control of the contest. In the 20th minute, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a quick attacking move with a precise pass that released Valverde behind the City defence.
The midfielder calmly rounded the goalkeeper before lifting the ball into the net to give Madrid the lead.
Despite enjoying periods of possession, Manchester City struggled to convert their control into clear chances. Attempts from players such as Bernardo Silva and Antoine Semenyo failed to trouble Madrid’s defence, while Courtois remained alert whenever called upon.
Real Madrid doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Valverde pounced on a pass inside the penalty area and fired a low, clinical strike into the right corner.

Manchester City attempted to respond after the break, with Jeremy Doku and Nico O’Reilly creating opportunities, but Courtois produced several important saves to keep the visitors at bay.
Real Madrid also had a chance to increase their lead in the second half when Vinicius Junior was awarded a penalty after a foul by City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. However, Donnarumma redeemed himself by saving the Brazilian’s spot kick.
With the match largely under control, Madrid comfortably protected their advantage until the final whistle, securing a commanding three-goal lead heading into the second leg.
The result leaves the Spanish giants firmly in control of the tie, while Manchester City face a difficult task in overturning the deficit to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
