Storm wreaks havoc in Kogi community

Residents of Egbeda Egga community in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State are assessing their losses after a rainstorm destroyed more than 40 houses and damaged several buildings.

The storm disaster on Tuesday also affected churches, business premises and schools.

Dr. Emmanuel Dare Otitolaiye, National President of the Egbeda-Egga Development Union (EDU), confirmed the incident while speaking to reporters.

He said the scale of destruction has left many families struggling to cope.

According to him, several residents have been displaced and are currently taking shelter with neighbours and relatives.

Otitolaiye appealed to the Ijumu Local Government Council, the Kogi State Government through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide urgent assistance to affected residents.

“We urge the authorities to provide immediate support for our people who have lost their homes, businesses, and sources of livelihood,” he said.

He added that the community requires emergency relief materials, including shelter, food, and medical support, to help victims recover from the disaster.

The community leader also called on non-governmental organisations, philanthropists, and other well-meaning individuals to support ongoing relief efforts. Local leaders say community members are working together to assist affected families while awaiting possible intervention from government agencies.

In a related development, the Okun Development Association, ODA, has added its voice to calls for support for victims of the storm.

Spokesperson of the apex sociocultural group, Pastor Dayo Thomas in a statement appealed to the governments at all levels, corporate bodies and individuals to help the community.

“We believe that collective efforts can help alleviate the suffering and rebuild the community…

“We stand in unwavering solidarity with the affected families and individuals, acknowledging their pain and struggles. Our thoughts are with those who have lost their homes and livelihoods, We pray that they find comfort and strength in this difficult time,” the statement added.
