Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has revealed that one of her songs was inspired by a complicated secret relationship she once experienced.
Speaking during an appearance on Way Up with Angela Yee, the “Rush” crooner disclosed that the relationship was a private and emotionally challenging situationship that only she and her partner knew about.
According to the singer, despite repeated advice from her friends to end the relationship, she found it difficult to walk away because of the emotional bond and friendship she shared with the person.
“It was a secret, unhealthy situationship, no one knew except us. My friends kept telling me to end it, but I loved him and kept going back because we had a real friendship,” she said.
Ayra Starr explained that although the relationship meant a lot to her, it eventually became clear that it was not progressing in the direction she had hoped.
The uncertainty surrounding the relationship later inspired her song “Where Do We Go,” as she began to question the future of their connection.
“It wasn’t going anywhere, so I started asking myself: where do we go from here? I wanted it private, but at the same time, I wanted him to fight for me,” she added.
The 23-year-old singer has recently been linked with fellow Afrobeats star Rema, sparking speculation among fans about a possible romantic relationship.
