The Federal Government has said that about 220 Nigerians are currently studying in the United Kingdom under the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), while over 8,000 others are studying in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shared this information during a meeting with some of the students in the UK. The meeting took place during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Britain.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, was also present at the meeting.

The Presidential Amnesty Programme was created in 2009 by former President Umaru Yar’Adua to reduce violence in the Niger Delta by disarming and rehabilitating militants.

Over time, the programme has expanded to include education, skills training, and empowerment.

Idris said he was happy to see the positive impact of the programme on the students.

He added that the government is committed to giving young Nigerians more opportunities to succeed and contribute to the country’s growth.

He also noted that the Niger Delta region has improved compared to the past, with better peace and development due to programmes like PAP.

According to him, the programme’s coordinator, Dennis Otuaro, confirmed that over 8,000 students are studying in Nigeria, while more than 220 are studying in the UK.

Idris described the programme as one of the most successful initiatives in the country and said the government plans to strengthen it further.
