“Everyone in Maiduguri knows this pattern. Every major Salah, we focus on potential bomb threats.” The governor explained that the recent surge in attacks is linked to militants being pushed out of forests and camps by the military.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has raised the alarm over two Boko Haram militants still at large in Maiduguri following Monday’s deadly bombings that killed more than 20 people.

Governor Zulum said intelligence confirmed that five insurgents entered Maiduguri with plans to attack, three of whom were killed during the blasts near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Monday Market, and the Post Office flyover.

The remaining two are still being sought by security agencies.

Speaking to the BBC, Zulum said the insurgents often change tactics, but security forces are working to prevent further attacks. He also noted that militants frequently strike around Islamic festivals, warning:

“Everyone in Maiduguri knows this pattern. Every major Salah, we focus on potential bomb threats.”

The governor explained that the recent surge in attacks is linked to militants being pushed out of forests and camps by the military:

“Whenever they face setbacks in the Sambisa Forest, they come into the city to show strength and attract attention.”

Zulum urged residents to remain vigilant, watch their surroundings, and provide information to authorities to help track the remaining suspects.

Security analyst Kabiru Adamu said intelligence indicates the attacks are directed by Boko Haram’s central leadership, with the ultimate goal of establishing a strict Islamic caliphate. He stressed that both Boko Haram and ISWAP operate with similar deadly intentions, and citizens must stay alert during Ramadan.
