A group called Lagos State Prominent Indigenes has asked the All Progressives Congress (APC) to allow only qualified Lagos indigenes to contest for the governorship in the 2027 elections.

The group said this is important to ensure fairness, equality, and inclusion in the state’s leadership.

They made this request during a technical committee meeting held on March 18, 2026. At the meeting, the group also showed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to run for a second term.

Members of the group agreed that by 2027, major leadership positions in Lagos State — including Governor, Deputy Governor, and Speaker of the House of Assembly — should be held by indigenes of the state.

In a statement signed by the Convener, Adesunbo Onitiri, the group explained that their demand is meant to promote fairness, protect local identity, and ensure that Lagos indigenes are fully involved in governance.

They also listed conditions for anyone who wants to become governor. According to them, such a person must have proven Lagos ancestry, good education, and strong experience in leadership, either in government or private work.

The group added that candidates must have good character and must not be involved in corruption or criminal activities.

They said such individuals should show discipline, integrity, and clear achievements both within and outside Lagos State.

The statement further explained that candidates must respect family and societal values and be able to work with others to bring positive development to the state.

The group also said it is ready to meet with all qualified aspirants to find and support those who can move Lagos State forward and serve the people well
