The ongoing leadership crisis within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has taken a dramatic and concerning turn, following the reported takeover of the union’s national secretariat in Abuja by members loyal to Tajudeen Baruwa.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, reflects the deepening divisions within the union, as Baruwa’s faction moved to assert physical control of the headquarters amid the lingering leadership dispute.

This action signals a shift from legal and political contestation to a more confrontational phase, raising fears about potential unrest and disruption within the transport sector.

The crisis dates back to 2024 and centers on a prolonged power struggle between Baruwa and Musiliu Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo.

While MC Oluomo emerged as National President following the union’s election in November 2024, the legitimacy of that process was challenged, leading to a legal battle over rightful leadership.

Subsequently, a court ruling favored Baruwa, granting his faction legal backing and recognition.

However, despite the judgment, MC Oluomo has continued to operate and present himself as the president of the union, thereby creating a situation of dual claims to authority.

This has significantly complicated the leadership structure of the NURTW and weakened internal cohesion.

The latest takeover underscores the inability of existing mechanisms both internal and judicial to fully resolve the dispute. It also raises serious concerns about the stability and governance of the union, which plays a critical role in Nigeria’s road transport system.

Any prolonged instability within the NURTW could have wider implications for transport operations, union members’ welfare, and public order, especially in major urban centers.

Overall, the situation highlights the urgent need for decisive intervention, dialogue, and enforcement of legal decisions to restore unity and ensure effective leadership within the union.

Without a clear resolution, the crisis risks further escalation, potentially leading to broader disruptions and conflicts within the transport sector.
